Swedish massage

Long, flowing strokes at an even pace

Swedish massage is the classic whole-body session: oil or lotion, long strokes, and a rhythm that stays steady from the first minute to the last.

It suits anyone who wants an hour of being looked after, and it's where most people start. Fran works through the back, legs, arms, neck and shoulders, with a little more time wherever you ask for it. Everything is done bare-handed, with an unscented oil or lotion unless you'd like a scent in the room.

How it goes

An hour, from the door to the porch

  1. 01

    Step 1: Settle in

A few minutes to talk about pressure and anything to leave alone, then Fran steps out while you get on the table.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The first half

Long strokes down the back and legs, slow enough to let go. You'll turn over about halfway.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The second half

Arms, neck, shoulders and the places you asked for. Pressure changes whenever you say.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Slowing down

The last ten minutes are quiet and unhurried. Take your time getting up; there's water and a chair by the window.

Good to know

Four things to know before you come

  • Pressure

Light, medium or firm is your call, and it can change during the session. Say the word and Fran adjusts.

  • Covered

A sheet and a blanket cover you for the whole session, and only the part being worked on is uncovered.

  • What to wear

Undress to your comfort, and wear whatever is easy to put back on. Leave jewelry at home or in your bag.

  • Ask first

If you're unsure whether massage is right for you right now, ask your doctor before you book. Fran doesn't diagnose.

Questions about this session

Is Swedish massage always light?

No. Swedish describes the long, flowing style, not how hard it is. Fran can work lightly or firmly, and checks with you as she goes.

Is there oil on the table?

Fran uses an unscented oil or lotion unless you ask otherwise, and she can tell you everything in it. Tell her when you book about any allergy.

How often should I come?

As often as suits you. Some people come once a month, some for a season, some when the week has been long.
