A slow hour at the edge of the hayfield

Swedish massage in a one-room studio on a working farm. One therapist, one table, and an hour that isn't hurried. Fran is taking new clients, and every session is booked ahead.

A hammock slung between two trees on a grassy hillside, with a picnic table and rolling hills beyond

The studio

One room, one table, a window onto the field

The studio is a single room on the farm, set apart from the house. There is a table, a chair for your things, a window that opens onto the hayfield and a small heater for the cold months.

A treatment room with one massage table, a rolling stool and a floor mat beside a window with trees outside

Fran works alone, so the hour is yours. There's no front desk, no music you didn't choose and nobody waiting in the next room. Come a little early if you'd like to sit on the porch first.

What to wear and what is covered

Wear what you came in

Undress to the point that's comfortable for you. Some people keep nearly everything on, some take off more. A sheet and a blanket cover you for the whole session. Only the part being worked on is uncovered, and it's covered again before Fran moves on.

Three rolled white towels resting in a hanging macramé chair

Fran leaves the room while you settle on the table, and knocks before she comes back in. You can ask for lighter, firmer or slower at any time, and you can pause, change position or end the session whenever you like. She stops right away.

Sessions by length

Pick a length

Every session starts with a few minutes on pressure and anything to leave alone.

Forty-five minutes

A short visit, one area at a time.

  • Back, neck and shoulders

    45 min

Unhurried work on the upper body, with the rest of you covered and resting. A good length for a first visit with a lot to say, or the week between longer ones.

An hour

The usual length, and the one most people begin with.

  • Swedish, an hour

    60 min

Long, flowing strokes for the whole body, at a pace that doesn't change when you look at the clock.

    Book: Swedish, an hour
  • Your first session

    60 min

The same hour, with a few minutes at the start to talk through pressure, anything to leave alone and how the session runs.

Longer

For a day with nowhere else to be.

  • A slow hour and a half

    90 min

The longest session on the table: whole-body work, a quiet pause in the middle, and no rush to get dressed afterward.

Your therapist

One therapist, every session

  • Fran Brooks in navy scrubs, holding a rolled towel in the studio

    Fran Brooks

    Massage therapist

Fran trained in Swedish and relaxation massage and does every session herself. She keeps a warm room, a quiet manner and one firm rule: the last ten minutes are never hurried. She speaks English, and she's at the studio Wednesday to Saturday.

Finding the farm

Park by the hayfield and look for the green door

The farm is on Orchard Street, a short drive from downtown Brattleboro. Park beside the hayfield, where there's room for a few cars. The studio is the building with the green door.

Hollyhocks and yellow daisies in a farm garden under a cloudy sky

Dogs live on the farm. If that matters to you, say so when you book and Fran will keep them away from the path to the studio.

Short answers

How long is a session?

The length you book is the length you get, on the table and under the sheet. Time to settle and to get dressed again is on top of it, so you're never watching the clock.

What do I wear?

Whatever you're comfortable in. You undress to your comfort and a sheet and blanket cover you for the whole session. Nothing is uncovered except the part being worked on.

Can I stop?

Yes, at any time and for any reason. Say so and the session pauses or ends right away.

How do I set the pressure?

Fran asks before you start and checks again as she goes. Light, medium or firm is your call, and it can change from one minute to the next.

Should I tip?

Tips are welcome and never expected. You can add one when you pay at the studio.

What if I'm not sure massage is right for me right now?

Ask your doctor before you book, and tell Fran anything you'd like her to know in the room. This is therapeutic massage, and she doesn't diagnose.
